5.0 out of 5 stars Great photo backpack for day hikes or regular use, January 3, 2012
This review is from: DAKINE Sequence Pack
I am a advanced amateur/semi-pro photographer and a total gear maniac. I purchased the Dakine Sequence backpack about 4 years ago before my first trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. I was taking a ton of gear (large SLR, four lenses, two flashes, batteries, chargers, remote triggers, monopod, tripod, cleaning gear, memory cards, and more) and my wife and I planned on hiking quite a bit. My gear was going to weigh in at 10-30 pounds depending upon what I brought with me on any given hike so I needed a bag that could handle that kind of weight and not destroy my back. This bag was more than up to the task. On the flight out to Colorado I even managed to squeeze my laptop into the rear compartment! I was very impressed during my trip with the comfort of the bag even while hiking 5 to 10 miles a day. It has enough room to fit all of my gear, strap my mono or tripod to the rear/sides, and have enough extra room for snacks, water and other day trip essentials. There's even a small bag attached to the waist strap and a few versatile nylon loops for attaching additional gear.

Several years later I am still regularly using the Sequence for outdoor adventures and everyday camera transport. The inside compartment is very cushy and is highly configurable. Nice large strips of velcro line the bottom and sides of the internal camera block. The camera block is removable as well, and features a carrying handle and strap. The outside pack itself has several pockets on the back for accessories, a small laptop, and more. The external pockets can get a little tight if you have the internal bag crammed full of stuff. Overall construction is excellent. The zips are all very heavy duty and work flawlessly. The Sequence's shoulder straps are also very comfortable and quite beefy. Coupled with the generous waist strap the pack is extremely comfortable to wear. The back cushion is thick and comfy.

My only complaints about the bag are minor and are easily corrected. The shoulder strap of the removable internal camera block is horrendous. If you plan on removing the block and using it outside the pack, be sure to plan on getting a replacement strap ASAP. Your shoulders will thank you! The other issue has to do with the optional rain cover. It's pretty good at stopping rain and has been a life saver on several occasions. But the cover is not quite big enough to securely fit around a fully loaded bag. It has a tendency to slip off the top while hiking leaving a little bit of the top pocket exposed to water. While the area is pretty small it still can get wet. I have never had anything ruined as a result, but I have replaced the rain cover with a larger one from a hiking pack.

Overall this is a great photo backpack. If you need a strong, capable pack for day hikes this is a great choice.

I have had my Dakine Sequence pack for 2 years now and although I spent some cash getting two other photopacks (one for skiing and one with a hydration reservoir) I have switched back to using the trusty Dakine Sequence pack. The inner compartment for holding your optics is very nice and the best part is that you can remove it quickly, with all your lens and camera bodies still in it. This is useful for traveling and other situations where you want to secure your gear, yet have it ready to go out into the field quickly. I put my inner compartment into a safe when I am not using it, for example. The pack holds my Canon 7D, EF 300mm f/4 and EF 400 f/5.6 lens easily, along with room for an extender and wide angle lens and separate Canon T2i body. It can also hold a jacket and lunch for the day, although most of the real estate is guided towards camera gear. It does come with an hydration bladder system, so you have to carry your water in a water bottle (which can fit easily in the side pockets). I often carry a full size tripod using the pack's tripod straps and that works great. I also like the fact this pack has nice compression straps. When I compare this pack to my other two photopacks (Clik Elite), the Dakine wins out since it is first a great technical pack, and second a camera pack. In other words you are getting the experience of an established maker of outdoor activity packs (i.e. Dakine). The Clik packs do not seem to be made as well (e.g. zippers, straps, lack of compression straps, etc.). Dakine Sequence is a great pack!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Backpack!, January 30, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DAKINE Sequence Pack (Misc.)
This backpack has lots of room! I trekked around Europe with this and was never uncomfortable with it, and I always had room for extra goodies (I wasn't backpacking Europe). As I only have my 60D and a few accessories, this backpack is very roomy for all of my gear, I was even able to pack enough stuff in there with the camera for an overnight trip to a friend a train ride away. Overall a great backpack, and I now use just the backpack part for my school stuff and it works great! Strongly recommend this to any photographer!
