4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but still a better option than a tablet, December 7, 2011
I have had my Acer AO722-0418 for about a week now. I ultimately decided to go with a netbook after experimenting with an Android tablet. Though tablets are cool and trendy these days, they are just too limited for my needs. I don't like the idea of buying in to one system or another (Apple, Android, etc). I also found typing on a tablet very cumbersome. Of course you can add a keyboard to a tablet, but if you're going to do that why not buy a netbook?

I wanted a powerful netbook. Most of the netbooks carried in my local stores were pretty limited with RAM and also only came with the starter edition of Windows 7. The 722-0418 appealed to me because it comes with 4GB Ram, 1MB L2 cache, and a 500GB HD. The display was also a higher resolution screen than most other netbooks in my local stores. The only concern I had was the 1.0ghz dual core processor. I still don't understand why Acer went with a slower processor than they did with their cheaper in-store models (D257, etc). These cheaper models have a 1.66ghz dual core processor compared with the 1.0ghz dual core of the 722-0418.

I am not a computer guru, but I came to the conclusion that they went with a slower processor to extend battery life and keep the cpu running cooler? From reading the specs from Acer it seems like the increased RAM and larger cache would help to make up for the slower processor speed, though perhaps this is not the case?

Now for the performance:

The main uses I use a netbook for are web surfing and watching Netflix/Hulu. Surfing the web over wi-fi is just as snappy as my 2.0ghz dual core Dell laptop. The touch pad pointer works well. It has a scroll feature that really makes using it easy to get used to. I did have some issues watching Netflix in HD. In fact, it didn't work at all. There was constant buffering and frozen picture and sound. However, when I unchecked the HD box on Netflix the picture came in great without any buffering at all. I am still happy with the performance of Netflix on the 722-0418, but one of their selling points was that this netbook would play 1080p. Obviously this wasn't my experience. Perhaps it will perform better over Ethernet cable than wi-fi, though my Roku 2 boxes stream 1080p over wi-fi just fine off over the same internet connection. Even with the HD box unchecked on Netflix, the picture was still DVD quality and will suit it's purpose just fine for me. Hulu streams 720p and it came through just fine with a great picture.

Another great feature of this netbook is the ability to remove the bloatware that comes pre-loaded, something that most tablets will not let you do unless you root or jail break them. I quickly removed the MS Office 2010 starter which comes loaded with advertising, and replaced it with my own copy of Office 2007.

Conclusion:

Despite the hiccup with the HD on Netflix I am very happy with my purchase. It's just as light and portable as a tablet, but much more powerful and flexible. It does everything I want it to do and has the freedom to add to it whatever I decide to. Considering I am getting a machine with almost 8 times the storage than most tablets at 9 shipped, why would anyone pay more for a tablet that is so limiting? There is a reason why tablets need apps..... because typing in a website on a tablet keyboard is a PITA! No need for apps on this netbook.... you get a large size keyboard and a pointer to click on your favorite full featured websites. For the price you just can't beat it.

This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO722-0652 11.6-Inch HD Netbook (Aquamarine) (Personal Computers)
I think this laptop is perfectly sufficient for most people's needs, and it has an aesthetically pleasing design to boot.

I like it quite a bit for everyday use because it's small and light, but it also has a full-size keyboard and a decently large screen. It has plenty of power for web browsing and streaming video, as well as a sizable hard drive. It can even run a lot of games, as long as they're not too graphics-intensive. (I'd suggest checking out the Good Old Games site for a bonanza of fun, cheap older games that will work just fine on this machine.) The battery life is also good.

In many ways, this is an alternative to an iPad for people who care more about spreadsheets and word processing (and storage) than a touch interface. I can back up my entire DVD library to this computer and watch half a season of Mad Men or something on a long flight without having to worry about an internet connection. Or I can play a real time strategy game. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Great netbook with large hard drive and small size. The built-in web cam is not the greatest but gets the job done. Great netbook for travel or for people on the go.
