5.0 out of 5 stars Not all earphones are created equal! A Qualified Recommendation. Ultimate Ears 600: A Critical Review., January 2, 2011

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:13 Mins

Update: (1/25/11) A former columnist for Stereophile magazine adds some very important information. See "Inspection and What is Burning your earphones?"

I want to start off by saying these are exceptional. And, they're exceptional when compared to the audio-fidelity of other earphones at different price points. But, there is however a concern--an industry-wide problem having to do with the basic design of earphones, especially, when you're asked to spend 0 for these. I'll address that in my conclusion.

* Inspection and What is "Burning In" your earphones?
** Testing
*** Suggestion and Conclusion

* There was a wonderful video review made last year by an audio engineer on one of Ultimate Ears higher prices earphones. I've looked for several days without any luck, because his explanation on how to "burn in" new, higher-priced earphones was particularly interesting.

To "Burn In" a pair of earphones is to play various music through them for an extended period of time and at higher volumes. As he explained, various kinds of music is used to make the speaker's skin more flexible and responsive sound at different frequencies, much like breaking in a new pair of shoes so that they can conform to the feet.

Additionally, William Sommerwerck of Stereophile magazine wrote me to say:

"Many years ago, when I reviewed headphones for "Stereophile", I discovered that a break-in -- running them for 12 hours or so with white noise at a very high level -- helped most of them. Those using conventional dynamic drivers improved the least. Electrostatic and orthodynamic drivers improved the most."

****** ********

Several manufacturers suggest "burning in" all of their earphones from the least expensive to the top-of-the-line. Others suggest only their premium line. My suggestion is to burn the moderate-priced earphones (-) and up. To put the economy-line earphones through that process may prove to be foolish.

I burned in these earphones for 30 hours straight before listening through them. So does burning earphones make a whole lot of difference? I can't say conclusively, but when these earphones were tested against another earphones in the Ultimate Ears line and against a couple from their competitors, the difference in sound reproduction is like night and day.

** To test UE 600, I compared them to stock Blackberry earphones (because if you have any audio player, these are the el-cheapo set you start out with.), Altec's "Muzik," and UE 170. The price ranges from free, , and 0, being the UE 600. For the better part of 6- 7 hours, I sampled tracks from the following cd's:

The Manhattan Transfer, Tonin'
The Lord of The Rings, The Fellowship of The Ring box set, Disc 1
Teena Marie, Greatest Hits (The Epic Years)
Michael Jackson, The Essential
Ella and Louis Again (Mobile Fidelity)
Bob Marley, Catch A Fire (Deluxe Edition) (Mobile Fidelity)
Bruce Springsteen, Live 1975-85 &
Sacred Treasures: Choral Masterworks From Russia

After having UE 170 for a year, one of the things I was expecting was an extremely comfortable earplug with sound better at different ranges. What I didn't expect was that there'd be a monumental gap in audio fidelity. In most of the albums I selected, the tone and tenor was remarkably reproduced and only a couple whose sound was only marginally better than the rest.

As you move up the price range, the frequency response on the UE 600 (20 Hz- 20 kHz) becomes more pronounced, that is the lows --the bass and instrumentation-- and the vocals and stringed instruments on the higher ranges becomes more clearly defined. Middle range was sharper, but most earphones are geared to capture the middle range, anyway.

Although, I (still) think that the Altec earphones could be better at that price range, it was by comparing the UE 170 to the UE 600 that made the biggest distinction. 170 has (like the BB and the Altec) a simple, stereo (right and left audio division) but there's a filter on the 170's that reduces the range and perhaps another that curves the sound, giving it an ambient-like feel to it. This results in a range where the instrumentation, at the lower levels, and the voices at the higher octaves are cut off. Although less distorted, it also produces a sound where the music is compressed and muddied in the process... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars An Earful of Sound, January 18, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you haven't already done so, read the first review of these earphones by Andrew Lawrence for the most comprehensive and definitive review. Read the others for confirmation or development of a consensus.

I like how Logitech packages their earphones, They're wrapped carefully in a soft enclosure so that the cords come out tangle free. An attractive, hard plastic storage case is included as are extra ear pieces in five sizes and two sets of foam tips to block out maximum noise.

At first I wasn't very impressed with these earphones. I used them on my desktop and laptop computers, comparing them over and over to the speakers and a pair of twenty dollar earphones. Try as I might I couldn't tell if the Logitech earphones were that much better. Then I read the first review here and remembered that I had to "burn in" my other pair of earbuds also. I hooked up the Logitechs to my desktop, clicked play all on my music folder, turned up the volume, and walked away.

I tried my comparison tests again. This time I could hear noticeable differences. With the Logitech I could hear a quality and subtleness not evident with my small Bose shelftop speakers or two other pairs of earphones. The clarity of instruments and background sounds is remarkable; sounds that weren't even evident before are now prominent.

Especially appealing to me is the noise-isolating feature. Sitting next to the kitchen television, I couldn't make out any of the muffled words from the television characters, words that seemed to be coming from the next room.
Mrs. Spudman was speaking to me during my sound experiment. I could see her lips moving but could't hear her. I just waved to her and smiled. Nice! Very nice!

If you are a dedicated audiophile, you may not mind spending 80 to a hundred dollars for a pair of quality earphones and will probably be very happy with these. I, on the other hand, though I can appreciate the quality and nuances of these Logitech phones would be just as content with a pair of middling earphones.

As good as the sound produced from these Logitechs may be, it is not so outstanding as to make this a must have product. For me at least.

I tested the Logitech ultimate ears on my top of the line HP notebook, an HP desktop, and my daughter's Ipod.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe I just got a bum pair. . ., January 18, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I received these in December as part of the Amazon Vine program. I typically use these types of headphones, because they don't hurt my ears and noise isolation is pretty essential to me, as I use my iPod mostly in a loud gym and on a noisy public transportation system.

First, the good news: These are the best at noise reduction of any headphones I've ever tried. I literally could not hear anything outside of the music/podcast playing. They were almost too good -- if I didn't have my metro stop memorized, I could easily miss it because I truly could not hear the stops being announced.

Next, the bad news: They appear to have broken already. I keep having to twist and turn the input jack to get adequate sound; otherwise it's prone to funky audio. And today I had an issue with static/interference on the right ear. It seemed to go away later - maybe because I was manipulating the jack to otherwise correct the audio - but I'm not counting on it staying away.

Maybe I just got a weird pair? I don't know -- but I'd definitely look to other reviews to see if there are similar problems being reported before I pay the + for these. 6 weeks is not enough time to justify having these kinds of issues.
