5.0 out of 5 stars I've Had a Great Experience So Far!, February 24, 2012
This review is from: ASUS N75SF-DH71 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)
I'm somewhat surprised by the other reviewers having problems as they have. I have had mine for almost 3 months and I have no big issues. The touch pad does take some getting used to but mine doesn't need excessive pressure. The one thing it does occasionally is go into zoom mode accidentally, but I think it's caused by touching it at more than one place while typing. I went in to the options and set it up like I like it when it was days old. The keyboard is reasonably good for me. It's not the best I've ever tried, but it is far from the worst and I prefer it to the HP and the Acer that are also in my household. I like the Mac keyboard my daughter has a little better.

I don't have any other issues. I bought mine from one of the large vendors that allow you to customize the laptop when you buy it. I put a 120GB SSD in lieu of the standard primary drive and a 750GB 7200 RPM unit as the secondary drive. I deleted the Blu-Ray burner and replaced it with a cheaper Blu-Ray player to cut the cost a little bit and because I don't anticipate burning Blu-Ray discs. I don't remember the other changes, but there were a few. I have 8GB of RAM, but slightly better than the original. I had the software installed by the vendor after the changes were made, without putting all the ASUS bloatware back in.

The monitor is very, very good. I had a previous ASUS (M70) with the same resolution but the colors were washed out on that one when watching movies or playing games. This one is fabulous. Everyone who tries it is very impressed. I like the way it gets rid of heat. I would prefer a different 12V connection because I like to hold it between my legs in a recliner occasionally and it sticks out in the way. The Mac solution is the best and I don't know why all vendors don't do something similar. Oh, yeah, the touch pad is getting shiny where I use it all the time. I've only played one game on it: Sniper- Ghost Warrior. It runs it at max settings without problems and it is beautiful. It is awkward to use this touch pad for gaming and I would prefer a mouse if I wasn't sitting in my recliner. Because of back problems, I can't sit upright in a different chair for long periods playing games, so for me I just make do. I might try some kind of a game controller.

I hope that this helps some of you to see that not all are dissatisfied.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, February 1, 2012

This review is from: ASUS N75SF-DH71 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)
I bought this at the very beginning of October when it went on sale. I currently have mixed feelings.

First off, the sound is brilliant, even without using the subwoofer. A friend of mine went outside, and when he came back in, I had music playing. It was loud and clear enough that he was shocked it was coming from the laptop rather than the tv. [No tinny sounds here!] Since summer has arrived, it is even loud enough to overcome a window A/C blowing behind me. My old Compaq would be drowned out at this time of year. The computer readily plays PC games without overheating or sounding like an engine (Left 4 Dead 2 on high settings, Borderlands, etc). I was pretty concerned about the overheat given that it lacks the giant fans the Asus RoG models have, but it hasn't been a problem. It also has no problem with HDMI-out. I did have to get used to the keys being shifted to the left compared to my old notebook (all the indicators and various function buttons like volume are on the left side), but I haven't had the problem another reviewer spoke of. I probably double-click less than I did on my old, smaller notebook.

The build of this model is fairly sturdy. While the glossy black does scratch (though not nearly as bad as I had expected), it's made of a much smoother, harder plastic than a lot of notebooks. I don't particularly worry that the case will give and press onto the back of the screen if I set something on it (like I did with my old notebook). The monitor has held up fairly well. Within two months, I had a bright dot but since then, only one other dot has appeared. Fairly minor stuff. And there hasn't been a single dead pixel so far, which isn't bad for a laptop with frequent use. It is otherwise very brilliant in color and contrast. It doesn't reflect as much as my old Compaq, even though the display appears glossier. It's also more vibrant in color than my Sony Bravia television. The display is quite beautiful.

The keyboard isn't overly loud and I don't have an issue with hitting more then one key at a time. However, some of the lettering has begun to rub away on the A and S keys (I've since switched to using a controller for gaming, but it's a bit late now). It might sound like I game a ton, but I will routinely go weeks or months without gaming a single minute on this laptop. The matte black surface of the mouse-pad and around the keyboard was initially nice, but there is now an area on the mouse-pad that has been rubbed off and displays a much less matte feel and look. As for the mouse-pad, it is the worst intentional design out of the entire notebook. My fingertips often hurt from the level of force it takes to press down on the keys. Asus took aesthetics too far; it might look prettier than the RoG mouse pads, but it's less functional. There is one long mouse key at the bottom of the pad, with a stiff bar under it right in the middle. So every time you press the key, you have to fight against the stiff plastic material of the key itself.

Speaking of the mouse, the USB ports began malfunctioning almost immediately. I tried updating the BIOS and reinstalling the USB drivers, and eventually just did a factory reset. None of it worked. I've had a Kobo Reader, a Kindle 4, a Kensington wired mouse, a Kingswin wired mouse and a Samsung Vibrant all throw up "Device cannot start" errors in the Windows device manager. In the case of the Kobo, a restart is required between each use. The Kensington mouse doesn't work at all anymore, and the other mouse and my phone are only recognized on the 3.0 ports. I also had the first and only blue-screen crash while using a USB-connected HP printer. I've contacted Asus support recently for an RMA. Thankfully, they include a 2-year warranty with the laptop.

While the audio is brilliant, it simply stops functioning entirely at random intervals. (I don't think it's overly common, but a search turned up at least one other owner with the same issue.) Often it involves Flash videos in Firefox, but it will also malfunction during audio playback in Winamp and video playback in VLC and PowerDVD. The Realtek Digital Output under Playback shows audio levels but the Speakers will not until I disable and re-enable it. Problem doesn't occur during HDMI-out or with an audio headset. I haven't tested it long enough after factory reset to see if it's been fixed yet.

In April, the power jack started having problems. At this point, the cord has to be positioned just-so to maintain a power connection. Often the icon overlay will flash back and forth between Battery and AC Mode. Problems with power jacks aren't uncommon to any laptop model, but I'm surprised by how soon it has occurred. This is what finally prompted me request an RMA.

I was initially very impressed with this laptop. Lightweight yet powerful, and extremely functional hardware-wise. I noticed the mouse key problem right off, but considered it a minor... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars ASUS N75SF: A Disappointment, December 14, 2011

I was so looking forward to this laptop computer after researching it. It seemed to excel compared with competitors. However, it didn't live up to expectations:

Pros:

Looks stylish, very bright/sharp monitor, huge touchpad that with one slide of the fingertip moves the cursor the whole length/width of the screen, sound is excellent with high volume potential, pretty light for its size, runs cool and speed of operation is fast.

Cons:

The touchpad can also be a negative because there is no defining border to know when you are going to touch it; being so large on the palm-rest area, my palms brushed it often and it interferred with my typing unless I turned it off.

The keys, even though they look nice, are flat with little space between them, which I found messed-up my keystrokes (I would tick a bordering key by mistake). Additionally, certain keys would not register unless I used excessive pressure; again, messing-up my keystroke rhythm.

The Asus software had some moderate compatibility problems working with Windows 7. I did 3 factory restores and still had OS conflicts. I ran a test on the OS and found Asus made changes to Windows 7 (to accommodate their programs, I guess) and 3 corrupted Asus files were identified, which cannot be replaced manually and Windows 7 could not fix them (you can read about it on the web if you research this problem with this particular model). The solution recommended from a forum was to install a clean version of Windows 7 (which can be downloaded from a European website) and use the Windows 7 authorization key on the underside of the laptop to activate it. I didn't try it so I don't know if it would work or how it would affect the integrated Asus programs.

Another suggestion was to phone Asus tech support to ask if they had a patch to correct the problem, which seemed easy enough. I wanted to also contact them about the keystroke pressure/registering inconsistencies. However, I could not find a USA support number on their website. As an alternative, I used their website to send a detailed message requesting support (twice, actually). I never did get a reply. Therefore, even though the warranty sounds great, if there is no tech support follow-up/follow-though, it is worthless.

I concluded there were irresolvable defects, so I returned the laptop to Amazon for a refund.

By the way, I ordered through Amazon on a Saturday morning and my computer was delivered on Monday morning....Wow, the free shipping for this product from Arizona to SF Bay Area was fast!
