But I had to chime in on my experience with this product. When I first installed the batteries it wouldn't turn on at all. I removed and re-seated the batteries and was finally able to get it to work. The compass doesn't work at all. It does show direction of travel arrow, but the other arrow that is supposed to be the electronic compass doesn't even work. It showed up a few times, wasn't accurate and then disappear. During a large part of my trip I had no signal at all and many times I was on top of a mountain. We had an old (7 years) GPS with us and it had a signal the whole time and worked much better. Most of the time the GPS showed us at least 650 feet of the trail when we were standing right on it.I might have been doing something wrong (I have used GPS's on many trips so I am not a novice), but the user manual was terrible. It only explains the basics and doesn't even do that very well. The screen keeps flipping over, which I can see would be nice if you have the GPS around your neck, but it flips for no apparent reason and then you have to try an use the GPS upside down. I acknowledge I may have received a bad device. But that doesn't account for the terrible user manual and the software is horrible. I am a software designer and I have rarely seen such a horrible software design. The one exception is the software is not compatible with a mac. Is it really that much work to include another version. Bootcamp is needed and a copy of windows for use on a mac. The device is ram mounted in my Tacoma with a USB adapter providing constant power. That's insane considering the ohter reviews I've seen on this item.Pro's - good map set (once you learn to use the Topo software), Interface with spot and InReach. Con's - Topo software who's interface is rediculously outdated and not user friendly. LOW BATTERY LIFE - this is a big one. SMALL SCREEN - to small to effectivley make use of some map detail (ie satelite maps). I've read a lot of reviews that site burned out pixels and software lockups. NOT WORTH THE CURRENT PRICE (anything over Three Hundred - 0).... WAS WORTH dealing with the battery life and small screen at 0 (two hundred fifty) which it was priced at two weeks ago. |
